Our newest Icon release uses Houston’s own Hugo’s Mexican chocolate tablets.
A while back, while enjoying brunch at Hugo’s on Westheimer, our marketing director and brunch connoisseur Lennie ordered a Mexican hot chocolate, made with chocolate tablets crafted in-house. He took one sip, and said to himself, “This needs to be a beer.”
He rushed back to the brewery (the next day) and brought some of the chocolate to our brewers, who agreed with him and became excited about the opportunity to work with such a delicious local ingredient. The result is Icon Blue – Chocolate Milk Stout, a beer featuring the Mexican chocolate tablets made by local icon and 2017 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: Southwest, Hugo Ortega.
Chocolate flavor, as you might imagine, dominates this beer, along with notes of toffee, stone fruit, and cinnamon. The sweetness is balanced by the hop and roast bitterness, and a medium body and creamy mouthfeel leads to a surprisingly crisp finish. This Icon release is a delicious dessert beer.
Icon Blue – Chocolate Milk Stout comes in at 5.6% ABV and 39 IBU. It is available on tap in bars and restaurants as well as in six packs of 12 oz bottles at grocery and liquor stores. It is beginning to hit the market now.
